Facebook & Google Plus: Marketing Features Comparison

The Google Plus and Facebook social networks provide a tool for consumers and businesses to connect on the Internet. Both websites offer different features to their customers to entice their business and usage. Despite these differences, Google+ and Facebook maintain many similarities in interface, features and usage.

Interface & Profiles
The interface for Google + consists of your news feed, tools to add content and lists of your friends. This setup is remarkably similar to Facebook’s layout. Even the profile pages list the same types of information including a profile picture, educational background, work history, likes, gender, birthday and relationship. All of this information comes with privacy controls to limit what information is shared with the general public and what information is shared with only your network. Your photos show in a stream along the top of your profile page on both websites. Both social media networks come with interactive games to play with your network and pages specifically for businesses.

Status Updates for Your Profile
At the top of your News feed-on both websites-rests the status update box. From this box, you add text to update your status. You upload photos, videos and links to add interesting content to your profile or timeline pages. This information is shared to your entire network or specific groups depending on the settings you designate on your status update.

Recommending Content to Your Network
Both Google + and Facebook provide ways to like or recommend content on their social media networks. On Facebook, users click the “Like” button to show the original poster they read the comment and liked it. These likes or recommendations show up in their own network feed for their friends. On Google Plus, users click the +1 button. Both serve the same function but are simply named differently.

Sharing Content on Your Social Networks
All content on FB and Google Plus is shared with your network. Members of your network then get the opportunity to share that content within their own network if they like it. By clicking the share button, users re-post the content to their own Google Plus or Facebook page for reading by their network.

Groups Versus Circles
Google Plus provides a “Circles” feature which allows you to categorize your network into groups: friends, family, book club, coworkers, etc. As you post status updates to your Google Plus page, you get to designate which circle the status update is designated for. Facebook offers a similar grouping feature. This lets you filter your status updates only to the people who actually care about the content you are uploading to your account.

Because both websites are very similar, it is common for people and businesses to simply pick one site for exclusive use. Both websites come with benefits and drawbacks. Give both websites a try before you pick the one you want to use. Businesses definitely want to be on both networks for marketing purposes. Each social network comes with its own base of customers that you want to focus your marketing efforts on.
